The essays in this issue of Art Journal, like those in Censorship I, combine historical, political, legal, philosophical, aesthetic, and social perspectives with the aim of identifying past and contemporary social, economic, and institutional structures that prohibit or inhibit the dissemination of images and ideas. It is our intention to engage in an analysis of and a broad critical dialogue about censorship and artistic freedom.
BARBARA HOFFMAN practices arts, entertainment, and First Amendment law in New York and is honorary counsel to the College Art Association. She is a former professor of constitutional law.
ROBERT STORR is an artist and writer, a curator in the department of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and a member of Art Journal's editorial board.
